A Bittersweet Season of Change

Monarch season is summer spilling over into autumn...when sunlight becomes softer and golden, the song of the cicadas intensifies, when trees turn on the color show, and the air thins with a crisp freshness. Just as the natural seasons bring change to our earth, so our own inner seasons also change. Autumn is a season of release, of letting go, and it is often bittersweet. This is a lesson the butterflies teach me. Read along to understand this unique view through my personal experience during the change of season.

Preparing for the Autumnal Equinox 2023

  The fall equinox approaches, arriving officially on Sept 23 to announce the arrival of the season.  Here on the prairie, the change of seasons is upon us.  I can feel the changes at a deep level, in my body, mind and spirit.  I’ve been riding the wave of activity that shows up in my garden – harvesting beans, squash, and tomatoes that are just passing that peak of hyperactivity that is both brief and wondrous.  It’s a time where I have a similar creative burst, writing, cooking, cleaning, and chasing after my straggly garden.  I’ve also found that I can lose sight of the larger rhythm, until I get “poked” by little waves of anxiety that say “hurry, you’re...

Plants: Are they speaking to you?

The sun is peaking through the covers in the sky, the cool morning is welcoming after a week of unbearable heat. I walk outside with my dogs to sit in the garden and drink a creamy cup of coffee, my daily ritual that has been on respite because of weather. My garden is a sanctuary where I can sit hidden from the world and talk to my green friends. My dogs enjoy nibbling on sweet grass and smelling the blooming plants. By this time of Summer, the garden has run unsupervised and is quite wild. I love a wild garden, where through the cracks of stone many volunteers peak through.
